One of the main themes of the work Raul Balai is born from a sensitivity as to how cultures remain at a distance created by historical reason and conditions. He uses a number of different styles, genres, to expose and explore what remains at stake within the history of diversities. What seems to be appropriate is to return the Western historical gaze and ask blatantly and humorously, “Are you serious?”

The Old Lady was shown at the Sukru Sani edition of the global Sugarfree project. “Sugar-Free arises out of an urgency to examine underlying histories of global commodities. (…) It is the aftermath that follows the global markets for these commodities that we will explore as a series of connected and disconnected moments across the ‘global south’ and ‘global north’. Edit Kaldor makes basic theater that consists of raw pieces of reality. The computing device is often deployed as a fellow-actor. In The Inventory of Powerlessness she investigates the experiences of those undergoing power. Powerlessness is not the opposite of power. It is the feeling or the state you are in when you’re subdued to incidents, power and arbitrary actions.

In the mid-1990’s Frans Lampe (1951, Tilburg) more and more began using the computer in order to create his work, making compilations of landscape photo’s. Here he discovered a way of working that, to him, felt unexpectedly similar to the painting process. Using his bike and camera he reconstructs the complex and multiple experience of watching landscapes. In the wink of an eye we distinguish distances, depths and close proximity.

“Exhibiting is like making a fool of yourself, and taking that foolishness seriously.”Robin Waart (NL/UK) uses repetition and collecting as a framework for projects with books, movie stills, photography, polaroids, and book pages. His works raise questions about (dis)continuity, what it means to look at, or do, the same thing over and over. In the context of M4gastcollege at West Wednesdays, Waart will talk on the topic of Shame and present work in the vitrines of Tetterode’s marble entrance hall. Robin Waart studied Classics in Amsterdam and received his BA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam, and MA from the Royal Academy of Arts, The Hague.

The works of Just Quist can be distinguished by their literal precision. For that very reason they are difficult to describe. To produce a work Quist processes texts and visual material. He chews on words, forms the language, develops images. He examines materials, their colours, the shapes. He thinks about mirroring, application, fusing, screening and outlining. His works are meant to function as things amongst other things. They are standing, hanging, lying in space and relate to the public. They live. In the context of the West Wednesdays theme Elements, Quist will talk about his painting Limonade Modern from 2018. He will clarify what the elementary particles of the composition are and how they stick together.
